Is Your Noosa Gas Regulator Compliant?

In the realm of gas safety, compliance is paramount to safeguarding lives and property. One critical component in ensuring the safe operation of gas systems is the gas regulator. However, not all regulators are created equal, and identifying compliant ones is essential to prevent potential hazards.

Following Safety Alert 111 issued on November 12, 2022 by Resources Safety & Health Queensland, concerning the identification of fuel gas regulators without overpressure protection (OPP), it’s imperative to understand the regulatory requirements outlined in Gas & Plumbing standards such as AS/NZS 1596, AS/NZS 4645, and AS/NZS 5601. These standards mandate that gas systems, including pipework and appliances, must be protected from over-pressurisation.

One effective way to achieve this protection is by utilizing regulators equipped with overpressure protection mechanisms. However, not all regulators on the market offer this crucial feature. To assist gas system stakeholders in identifying non-OPP regulators, examples have been provided. While this list isn’t exhaustive, it serves as a guide for gas work license holders, authorization holders, and gas system owners. See examples below of gas regulators that do not have overpressure.

If non-OPP (over pressure) regulators are discovered within a gas system and there are no alternative protection measures in place, immediate action must be taken to mitigate the risk of over-pressurisation. Typically, this involves replacing the non-compliant regulator with one that provides overpressure protection. Additionally, it’s recommended that regulators be replaced according to manufacturer recommendations or undergo assessment every 15 years if specific guidelines aren’t available. See example below of a compliant gas regulator as of 2024.
